What is waste sorting and why is it important?

    Questions remain?

We generate tons of waste every day, and without waste sorting, the consequences would be catastrophic for the environment. Just think: recycling one ton of aluminum can save as much energy as is needed to power an average home for 10 months. And recycling one ton of paper will save about 17 trees. That’s why everyone can do their part to protect the environment by simply separating their garbage into paper, plastic, glass, and organic waste. After all, waste sorting is the separation of waste into different categories that can be effectively recycled or disposed of. Here’s how to make this process as comfortable as possible for yourself.

Landfills and waste: the important things in facts and figures

Every year, billions of tons of waste are produced worldwide, most of which ends up in landfills. As the population grows, all the waste ever thrown away takes hundreds of years to decompose and not only takes up valuable land resources, but also causes greenhouse gas emissions that lead to climate change.

Today, not only the world, but also Ukraine is making huge strides towards waste sorting and efficient waste disposal, although not at the pace we would like.

Every year, Ukraine generates about 10 million tons of household waste, of which only about 5% is recycled. The remaining 95% of waste ends up in landfills. According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the amount of waste per person and per unit area continues to grow. However, the situation is not as bad as it might seem at first glance.

In recent years, Ukraine has been making progress in waste management. For example, in 2019, 108 million tons of waste were disposed of, bringing the total amount of accumulated waste to 15 billion 398.6 million tons.

It is also exciting to see that more and more waste is being recycled and reused. This not only reduces the need for new landfills, but also contributes to a greener economy. Now that we know the importance of waste sorting, each of us can get involved. Let’s start with simple things: sorting garbage into separate containers, using reusable bags and bottles, and supporting innovative recycling projects.

Why is it necessary to sort garbage?

Every time we put plastic, paper, glass, or metal in separate containers, we reduce pollution and save natural resources. So, giving a second life to your waste is not only responsible, but also very exciting.

Plastic can become new bottles, toys, or even clothes. Paper – sheets for books and notebooks. Glass can be melted down endlessly without losing its quality. And metals? They can serve us again in the form of various objects.

But it’s not just the material benefits that are important. Sorting waste also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as recycling requires significantly less energy and natural resources than producing new materials from scratch. Thus, everyone can become a part of the global climate protection movement.

The main reasons why you need to sort your waste.

    1. Resource conservation: recycling reduces the need for new resources.
    2. Reducing pollution: sorting waste reduces air and water pollution.
    3. Protecting the environment: proper waste management preserves biodiversity and natural environments for future generations.

Who uses recyclables and what is made from them?

The benefits of waste sorting are tangible in many areas. Companies in various industries are actively using recyclables to create new products. For example, the paper industry recycles old paper into new paper, reducing the need for cut trees.

The textile industry turns old clothes into new textiles or other materials. The construction sector is actively using recycled glass and plastic to create insulation materials and components for buildings.

In addition, there are companies that specialize in creating interior items, accessories, and even art from recycled materials. This not only saves resources but also promotes the creative industry.

    Waste sorting in Ukraine

Every year, Ukrainians are becoming more and more aware of the importance of separate waste collection and why they need to sort their waste. In Ukraine, more and more cities are implementing waste sorting systems, setting up special containers for paper, glass, plastic and organic waste.

Educational programs and eco-initiatives such as “Batteries, Give Up,” the mobile app “Sort!” and modern functional waste sorting containers both at home and on the streets are important things that drive progress in this area. In addition, special waste sorting signs – pictograms or symbols – help people understand how to sort waste into separate bins. These mark hazardous waste such as batteries and light bulbs.

These are just a few examples of eco-activities that you can be proud of and use. They are inspiring and demonstrate that everyone can contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
